STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — A smiling Matt McGloin’s eyes lit up when asked about new Penn State coach Bill O’Brien’s star pupil at his other job.

After finishing up his duties as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach of the New England Patriots through the NFL postseason, O’Brien will leave Tom Brady, and join McGloin full-time in Happy Valley.

O’Brien’s second day as Penn State’s new leader included a standing ovation after being introduced at a basketball game, and his first meeting with McGloin and his new players.

So, it’s now time for McGloin, the Nittany Lions starting quarterback, to start studying up on film of Brady, the Patriots’ standout signal-caller.

“That’s it right there. That’s enough … It couldn’t get any better,” McGloin said Sunday when asked how much it would help to be coached by someone who tutored Brady.

What else did McGloin like about the New England offense?

“I don’t know, that Brady threw for like 5,000 yards,” McGloin said with a chuckle.

That’s 5,235 yards to be exact. And Brady isn’t done. In fact, O’Brien was scheduled to fly back to Massachusetts on Sunday night to help Brady and the Patriots prepare for the Denver Broncos. New England had a bye this week after securing the No. 1 seed in the AFC, and learned late Sunday that Denver – a 29-23 overtime winner over Pittsburgh in the wild-card round – would be the opponent.

O’Brien will likely remain with the Patriots the rest of the week, though he’s also expected to name the rest of his Penn State coaching staff within a few days.

“I’m sure you’ll figure it out,” O’Brien said Saturday after his introductory news conference about his travel schedule. “I’ll be on the move.”

Just like during a whirlwind weekend in which he was announced as the successor to fired Hall of Famer Joe Paterno. Division I’s winningest coach (409 victories) was ousted by school trustees two months ago in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges against retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

O’Brien’s five-year contract, finalized Friday, included base compensation starting at $950,000, with a 5-percent increase each season. O’Brien will also collect another $1 million a year for radio and television work, as well as a $350,000 Nike contract.

By Sunday, he was doing radio and TV interviews during the basketball team’s 88-82 loss to No. 12 Indiana. As O’Brien ventured into the stands to shake hands with pep band members and students, the crowd erupted into cheers of “We Are … Penn State!”

“I can’t tell you how excited I am to get started,” he said Saturday.

That enthusiasm apparently carried over into Sunday’s team meeting. Afterward, players expressed relief that a turbulent two months that began with the departure of their beloved coach had finally ended with a new leader eager to start a new era in Happy Valley.

“Very enthusiastic. Tough, tough football coach,” guard John Urschel said. “We were all excited to talk to him … especially the guys on the offense.”

In between, the Nittany Lions had to put up with countless questions and rumors about who might be their next coach. The players, who just returned from semester break, learned about O’Brien’s hiring watching television or through Twitter postings.

“It’s like a big monkey is off our backs,” tailback Silas Redd said. “We can focus on the team and getting ready for next season.”

As for his impressions of his new coach, Redd said O’Brien’s demeanor reminded him of someone with a military background – even though O’Brien apparently doesn’t have such experience.

“The way he’s tough minded. His leadership qualities. He really has a strong way of getting you to pay attention to him,” Redd said. “We’re ready to rally behind him.”

So, too, is former Penn State linebacker Brandon Short, who in a statement Sunday said he planned to reach out to O’Brien and pledge his full support.

Short and fellow former standout linebacker LaVar Arrington had helped organized a petition supporting interim coach Tom Bradley’s candidacy for the job.

Before O’Brien was officially named coach Friday night, Short had said he would consider severing his relationship with the school if someone without Penn State ties was hired, and that there might be a backlash from other former players.

“Out of a sense of frustration and deep loyalty for Penn State, I was overly harsh in some of my comments regarding the hiring of Coach O’Brien,” Short wrote in an email Sunday. “I want Coach O’Brien to succeed at carrying on the proud tradition of Penn State.”

Short maintained that he thought the selection process would have been better served if the search committee had more involvement from former players, and that he thought Paterno and the program had received unfair criticism over the last two months.

Paterno testified before a state grand jury investigating Sandusky, and prosecutors have said he is not a target of the probe. Sandusky is awaiting trial after pleading not guilty last month.

As for the rest of O’Brien’s staff, linebacker Michael Mauti said Sunday that his position coach, Ron Vanderlinden, appeared likely to return. Another holdover from former Paterno’s staff, defensive line coach Larry Johnson, has already said he is coming back.

Having Vanderlinden and Johnson should help Penn State with recruiting while O’Brien finishes up with the Patriots. The returnees will also help to maintain some continuity on defense.

“It’s encouraging to me,” Mauti said. “Our front seven is a big part of our defensive success.”

Tennessee Titans quality control assistant coach Charles London has also accepted an offer to join O’Brien’s staff as running backs coach, London told The Tennessean of Nashville on Saturday. O’Brien and London worked together at Duke, and London’s head coach with the Titans was former standout Penn State lineman Mike Munchak.

Bradley, a 33-year veteran of the staff and defensive coordinator since 2000, is expected to leave, as is Paterno’s son, quarterback coach Jay Paterno.

MOSCOW ? An oil drilling platform has capsized in the Sea of Okhotsk off Russia’s east coast, leaving four people reportedly dead and 49 missing.

The Emergencies Ministry said in a statement Sunday that there were 67 people aboard the platform as it was being towed about 200 kilometers (120 miles) off the coast of Sakhalin Island in stormy conditions. It said 14 people had been rescued.

Russian news agencies later cited ministry officials as saying the bodies of four people had been found. Officials could not immediately be reached for comment by The Associated Press.

DETROIT ? The Green Bay Packers are working on a perfect season. The Detroit Lions have plenty to work on following a slew of physical and mental mistakes.

Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes and the Packers built a big lead in the third quarter, taking advantage of Ndamukong Suh’s ejection and beating the Detroit Lions 27-15 Thursday.

The defending champion Packers are 11-0 for the first time in franchise history and have won a team-record 17 straight, including the playoffs.

Green Bay easily passed what was expected to be one of its toughest tests toward joining the 2007 New England Patriots as the NFL’s only teams to have 16-0 regular seasons.

The Lions fell to 7-4 ? losing a franchise-record eighth straight Thanksgiving game ? and added to their misery in ugly fashion.

Suh was tossed for stepping on Evan Dietrich-Smith’s arm in the third quarter and Matthew Stafford threw three interceptions.

The Packers turned Stafford’s interceptions into two TDs and a field goal, going ahead 24-0 late in the third.

Detroit finally scored when Keiland Williams ran for a 16-yard TD with 13:11 left and added a 2-point conversion pass from Stafford to Titus Young. It also scored a meaningless TD on Stafford’s 3-yard pass to Calvin Johnson with 11 seconds left.

The Lions raised expectations for their ability to compete and entertain during their annual showcase after losing the last seven games by three-plus TDs on average.

They kept it close early ? in a punt- and penalty-filled first half ? then simply couldn’t keep up with Rodgers’ passing attack and failed to stay disciplined.

Rogers was 22 of 32 for 307 yards with two TDs ? a 3-yard pass to Greg Jennings with 4:51 left in the first half to make it 7-0 and 65-yard pass to James Jones in the third for a 21-0 lead. He fumbled once, but a teammate recovered the football.

“Second half, we got under center a little bit more, started running some regular offense and just kind of got things going,” Rodgers said. “We had a good bead on what they’re going to do there in the third quarter and James ran a nice post route and I didn’t underthrow him too bad and he ran in for a touchdown. That kind of got us going.”

Stafford was 32 of 45 for 276 yards with a TD in the final seconds and three interceptions, getting picked off by Charles Woodson, Clay Matthews and Robert Francois.

Detroit became the NFL’s first team to win three games in a season after trailing by 17 points with Sunday’s comeback win over Carolina, but the Packers proved they weren’t as vulnerable as the Panthers.

Green Bay’s winning streak, including its run in the 2010 playoffs, equals the streak the Oakland Raiders had during the 1976-77 seasons.

New England won 18 straight during the 2007 season only to lose to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl.

The Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints were the last teams to start a season 11-0, pulling off the feat two years ago.

Detroit’s best shot to beat the Packers ? as it did at home last year ? was to knock Rodgers out of the game like they did last year. The Lions gave that tactic their best shot, hitting him even if he had gotten rid of the ball. Kyle Vanden Bosch was flagged for one of those late hits and could’ve drawn a penalty for doing even more to the star quarterback on the same drive.

Rodgers refused to be rattled, kept his cool and won ? again.

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The tug-of-war between the New England Patriots and New York Jets resumes Sunday night when the Patriots come to the Meadowlands for another AFC East showdown.

The teams are tied with Buffalo with 5-3 records, but this time in their see-saw series the Jets have the momentum and the Patriots are struggling.

New York limped out of Foxborough a month ago after a 30-21 defeat to the Patriots that gave them a three-game losing streak and a 2-3 record.

Now New England and quarterback Tom Brady are struggling, coming off back-to-back losses to the Steelers and Giants, who handed the Pats their first regular season home loss after 20 straight wins.

Going against the National Football League’s lowest-ranked pass defense, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez could be the key.

“I’ve just been proud the last three weeks of the way we really worked through three tough losses at one point in the season,” Sanchez told reporters on Wednesday.

“This is right where we want to be and there’s no better team that we’d want to play.”

With center Nick Mangold back from injury, the Jets have rounded into shape on offense with the running game revived and Sanchez getting comfortable with new receiver Plaxico Burress.

Still, questions remain over whether the third-year quarterback is ready to step into a starring role for a team that relies so heavily on its defense, the pride of defensive-minded head coach Rex Ryan.

“We’re coming into our own as an offense,” said Sanchez. “I don’t care if we throw it 100 times or run it 100 times, as long as we’re winning. We’re in the winning business and we’ve got to win, so whatever it takes.”

Jets-Patriots games have been hard to figure.

Last year, both teams were 9-2 when the Jets traveled to New England for a Monday night clash in December with an inside track to the AFC East title at stake. The Patriots won 45-3.

In the second-round of the playoffs, the wild card Jets returned to Gillette Stadium and beat the Pats 28-21.

Mangold was upbeat about their Sunday night date.

“I think we are really finding our rhythm. We were kind of missing that for a little bit, having that skid, the two-game skid going into (the last Patriots game),” he said Wednesday.

“(Now) we’re just firing on all cylinders, we’re executing, we’re not missing assignments. We’ve worked very hard to correct those things.”

Coach Ryan said he knew it was just a matter of time.

“I don’t know who would’ve counted us out, but we certainly didn’t count ourselves out,” he said. “We knew that our team could improve.

“We thought we could get better, and we have gotten better. So we’ll see how much. This is the tops. If you want to win your division, you’ve got to beat these guys.”

When Ryan took the Jets job three years ago, he said that while he respected the three-time Super Bowl champion Patriots, he was not about “to kiss the rings” of coach Bill Belichick.

“Both teams are going to be humming for this one,” said Ryan. “You can sugarcoat it all you want, but they know they need it and we know we need it.”
