Gotta love this. The mayor of Vilnius, Lithunia, an avid cyclist who is bringing a bike share program to his city, demonstrates what will happen to drivers who park in the city's bike lanes. Arturas Zoukas, Vilnius' mayor, decided to make an example of the Mercedes parked in the bike lane. In cities where space is a premium – like all European cities – respecting the small bit of the public space devoted to cyclists is increasingly important. So Mayor Zoukas drove over the Mercedes in an armored personnel carrier. Nice. OK, OK, so it's staged right down to the Mayor sweeping up the glass in the final shots. (BTW, Mayor, the "owner" of the car could use a little polish on his acting chops). But the point is valid, and it's just straight up awesome to see an armored personnel carrier drive over a Mercedes. Nice going Mayor Zoukas, nice going; although that weird European bike you're riding kind of sketches me out a bit. At least you're not waring Capris? Enjoy?and forward to your mayor's office, maybe, just maybe, he or she will grow a sack and start advocating for biking in a meaningful way. Thanks Grist.
